The 20-year-old bedroom pop sensation beabadoobee, who only began recording music in 2017, has gone from strength to strength lately. From releasing the astoundingly well-received Space Cadet EP last year, to being awarded the NME Radar Award this past February, Bea’s trajectory shows no signs of slowing. New single Care is also accompanied by the announcement of her debut album Fake It Flowers.
Care doesn’t stray far from Space Cadet’s grungy sound, with the verses being a combination of beabadoobee’s serene vocals amid her beautifully honest and plaintive lyrical momentum into the chorus, the robust guitar tones slicing in and out of these. Her latest, in a similarly moving way to tracks like If You Want To, has a tone of complete candour. Here though, Bea emits a striking vitriol at the world. The enduringly powerful chorus line of “I don’t want your sympathy I guess I’ve had it rough, but you don’t really care!” is followed by a series of staccato rhythm section stomps, as beabadoobee beats away at society’s condescension with every yell of “care!”. A delightfully delicate lead guitar rounds off the track perfectly.
Bea describes Care as encapsulating “90s movie vibes, like you’re driving down a highway.” The track illustrates her anger at “people around me who I just don’t think know me and don’t care. I don’t want you to feel fucking sorry for me. I just want you to understand what I’ve been through.”
The track is also accompanied by a sufficiently DIY music video, which the songwriter describes as being “it feels like its turned out as one of the most personal, real videos I’ve made”. Watch below.
