WITH one breezy and effortlessly ace single under his belt, the bass lyricism and indiepop jangle of “Teal”, former Dead Pretties man Jacob Slater is out to prove his champion solo career as Wunderhorse is no one-trick pony with another lovely single drop, “Poppy”. Take a dive herein.
Jacob’s done a fair bit of living since Dead Pretties fizzled and fractured in 2017, the members going their separate musical ways; he’s also about to make his acting debut playing Paul Cook in Danny Boyle’s forthcoming series about the Sex Pistols for FX.
Setting the jangle of that fine debut “Teal” aside for now, Jacob bounces forward for new label Communion with “Poppy”, a hazier and more atmospheric kinda big-screen chime, bringing to mind Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke as guitars rile and writhe with chorus-pedal grandeur. Helluva song, actually.
He says of this, only his second postcard from the Wunderhorse stable: “’Poppy’ is a song about a time and place long forgotten that suddenly returns to you in vivid recall, kind of like a dream that doesn’t belong to you anymore.
“I was listening to a lot of Jeff Buckley’s live album, Mystery White Boy, when I wrote it, trying to work some of that kind of falsetto into it.”
His just might be quite the guitar journey to hitch your wagon to. Keep ’em peeled on a flowering solo career.
