Soundtrack of our Lives: Ross Cameron of Bang Bang Romeo

Ross

Fresh from becoming one of the most talked about bands that played the Tramlines Festival, Bang Bang Romeo are poised to release their latest single, “Revolver”, which finds their sound evolve on from their rapturously received We Were Born EP.

In between preparations for the single release, video shoots and radio sessions, guitar player Ross Cameron kindly agreed to be the latest of our local music heroes to answer a few questions on the music that matters to them.

The track that influenced us to start making music?

We were influenced massively by the soundtrack to Django Unchained! We’re all huge Tarantino fans, and his soundtracks are always so iconic, it was something the band had a mutual love for and I think you can hear the influence at times on our ‘We Were Born’ e.p.

Our tour bus favourite?

We listen to The Mamas and the Papas a lot, especially “Straight Shooter” and Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed And Confused” is a big favourite but the track that’s had the most hammer on the road is the Polyphonic Spree’s “Its The Sun” …we just want another 20 members in BBR now…. ‘SUUUUUUUUUUUUN’!!!!

Our Saturday night tune?

“Spread Your Love” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a mammoth track that we listen to on a Saturday night. We would love to support them some day!!!

And our Sunday morning record?

It would have to be something delicate for the hangover, like Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)”.

The Cover we would love to play?

We often cover “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac, and even shared a special moment with Jolta’s frontman Oliver Tooze when he joined us on stage for a rendition of it last year!! But the one we all keep talking about at the moment is “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” by The Beatles!!

The best cover of all time?

For me the best cover of all time is Nirvana’s unplugged version of Leadbelly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last night?”. I’ve listened to this countless times, Kurt Cobain’s vocals are perfect.

The best song we/I have written?

Our new single “Revolver” is possibly our best to date. I played it to the guys on the acoustic guitar and everyone just got it straight away, it was the first time we didn’t have to talk to each other, we turned it into a monster telepathically. We were also lucky to record it at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, where the likes of The Coral and Coldplay have recorded, and it was produced by Tony Platt who has worked with Bob Marley and AC/DC etc.

The song that I remember from my childhood?

My dad has been a massive influence on me, he played guitar, wrote his own songs and was always playing music in the house. I remember him putting The Magical Mystery Tour on one afternoon when I was really young and I was mesmerised by “I Am The Walrus”, it definitely influenced me over the years.

Our favourite track made by our friends?

“The Hard Way” by Dexters is a great song. We’ve gigged with them a few times now and they put on an amazing live show, top lads too!!

The words of this song inspire me?

Guy Garvey is one of my favourite lyricists. I love songs that can paint a picture and its what he does best, effortlessly. Theres an Elbow song called “Scattered Black & White” and its lyrics have always inspired me. The guy is a genius.
