TRACK: The Lemon Twigs – ”No One Holds You (Closer Than The One You Haven’t Met)’: arch songwriters’ take on soured romance

BRIAN and Michael D’Addario, the brothers and musical prodigies who dazzle us mere mortals as The Lemon Twigs, are tantalising us with another taster from their forthcoming third full-lengther for 4AD, Songs For The General Public.

“‘No One Holds You (Closer Than The One You Haven’t Met)” like everything the D’Addarios touches, it crams more ideas into its three minutes than some bland tunesmiths manage across a career.

It concerns the bittersweetness of romantic failure and fantasies: “No one compares to the one that you invented in your head.”

It does that Lemon Twigs thing of touching base with Todd Rundgren, Lennon, Big Star, The Raspberries, Kiss, many more; filtering their melodic and stylistic arrangement brilliance and fusing it all together, all at once. As the kids, of whom I am an honorary member, say: I can’t even. It’s insanely catchy and just that little bit odd.

Songs For The General Public will be released by 4AD on August 21st on digital, CD, trad black and limited translucent red vinyl; the first 200 vinyl pre-orders made through the 4AD Store will receive a limited-edition print signed by the brothers. Pre-order here.
