American songwriter and producer, Barrie, has shared her latest single Quarry with the announcement of new album Barbara, due out on 25 March. The strength of ‘Quarry’ is in its softness – Barrie’s romantic, delicate vocals match the pace of pulsating drums, synths and bass. A veritable showcase of the artist’s fearless new sound, the song tells of falling in love in an isolated environment. Barrie says of ‘Quarry’; “It’s uplifting but also a little wary. The quarry reference is the quarries in Massachusetts that I grew up with. We’d sneak into the private quarries and jump off the rocks to swim’”.

‘Quarry’ follows the release of Frankie, which received support from the likes of Billboard, KCRW, triple j and Double J.

The official video for ‘Quarry’ was directed by Emmy-Award winning filmaker Robert Kolodny (Japanese Breakfast, Frankie Cosmos) and features Barrie cutting off all her hair. On the story behind the video, Barrie explains; “I’ve been looking for a long time for a push to buzz my head. This video was the perfect place to do it. It captures the vulnerability, reckless confidence, and insular nature of the narrative of the song”.

“Our friend Rob Kolodny is a really talented director and DP, and we had a really fun day wandering around Bed-Stuy cutting hair. We freaked a lot of people out… It was a good reminder of its significance, and made me double down on ignoring everyone around me” -Barrie

The soft-spoken Barrie Lindsay grew up tinkering with instruments in Ipswich, Massachusetts. After graduating in 2012 with a degree in music, she formed a 5-piece band called ‘Grammar’ with her brother. The next few years were spent quietly making music in Boston and working at a sculpture studio, until Barrie was discovered on Soundcloud by a manager who encouraged her to move to Brooklyn. Soon after, ‘Barrie’, the 5-piece band, was born. A number of successful singles, as well as 2019 debut Happy To Be Here earned some acclaim, however the group eventually parted ways and Lindsay reintroduced Barrie as a solo project.

Forthcoming album ‘Barbara’ heralds a transformation of style, one that brings Barrie’s hallmark lyricism to the forefront with personal tales of love and loss, accompanied by intense instrumentation. Written soon after her father’s passing and whilst falling in love with (now wife) Gabby, the diaristic Barbara boldly brings to life Barrie’s inner world. And seeing as she wrote, played on and produced the album by herself, Barrie felt the work should be self-titled. On this, she says; “Barbara is my legal name, my formal name. No one calls me Barbara except the bank and the government, and odd occasions when my dad inexplicably introduced me that way to friends. Since my name and moniker are Barrie, calling the album Barbara felt like the fitting way to keep that balance between intimate and public.”

Barrie – Barbara is out 25 March on Winspear, and we can’t wait to dive in.
