LIVING among the gnarly granite and crashing waves of Cornwall’s rugged north coast is no bad thing for creative inspiration and evocation; as debuting Cornish singer Billie Flynn knows, as she unveils the hushed folk mystery of “Hey Stranger”
Billie has just signed with Gabrielle Aplin’s Never Fade imprint and this first drop is, I fully think, imbued with the big horizons and the otherworldliness you can still find around Kernow. She sings with hush, as if appearing through one of that coast’s regular sea mists; her acoustic guitar arpeggios with campfire intimacy; keyboards add a rolling, brooding landscape to her tale of love and loss and what they would think of you in the here and now.
Laid down at her home studio in Cornwall with additional production tweaks added remotely during lockdown by JMAC, it captures the bliss of the Duchy – but also its high, sobering drama.
Billie says: “This song came to me in a dream. I dreamt the melody and woke up frantically trying to find my phone to record a voice note; I still have it.
“It’s about seeing someone again that isn’t in your life anymore and hoping that they’re proud of who you are now.”
Billie’s got a pretty much hometown gig approaching, with a slot confirmed for Newquay’s Boardmasters next month, and her debut EP is also in the works.
