AMSTERDAM-based singer-songwriter Cosmic Crooner is back in his own Willy Wonka-esque dreamworld of sleazy cool with his new single, “Popsicle Place”.
Following the release of his debut, Nouvelle Vague-inspired single “Deep Down In Jazz”, Cosmic Crooner hits all the notes when it comes to bringing the quirks and charm of 70s’ psychedelic lounge music. I would go as far to say that his unique songwriting stamp could be classified as ‘doowop space pop’, compete with serenading Wurlitzer minor-chord progressions amidst a video backdrop that makes you feel isolated yet somehow drawn to the eeriness, all at the same time.
It’s no wonder, as he filmed the video for “Popsicle Place” himself with the help of Lin Bartraij & Elf Godefroy , inspired by the 1964 Italian film Il Deserto Rosso, by Michelangelo Antonioni. It’s a soundtrack of a light nightmare if you will, echoing with reminders of the Crooner’s vocal tribute to Lou Reed, Gainsbourg and Bowie, set to a not-too-distant future of a reinvented dream state.
His voice is highly stylised and more empowering than on his previous track, “Deep Down In Jazz”, most probably because of the kind of story he’s narrating.
He’s truly the perfect backdrop to a rainy summer Sunday where you feel comfortable enough to take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about your adolescence; and if you’re a musician, the lost art.
