Faye Webster’s latest track release ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’ is the artist’s fourth single (following Cheers’, ‘Better Distractions’ & ‘In A Good Way’) as well as title track from her eagerly anticipated new album, which will be out on 25 June via Secretly Canadian.

Webster says of the song: “It went from being a thought, to a lyric, to a song title, to an album title. These are the thoughts that go through my head when writing a song – things that people might easily overlook and don’t think are worthy or pretty enough to be sung.”

The follow up to the Atlanta-based singer’s 2019 breakthrough Atlanta Millionaires Club, ‘I Know I’m Funny haha’ is an enchanting culmination of Webster’s talent for fusing her emotions with music. The resulting, unique sound is as simple as it is intricate, drawing inspiration from classic Americana as much as from steel-guitar pop as much as from the local  R&B community (Webster released her sophomore self-titled album with Awful Records in 2017).

This record has a markedly brighter vibe and is more upbeat than previous offerings, something the singer confirms is a direct reflection of personal life changes: “When I wrote AMC, I was living by myself and on some don’t-know-what-to-do-with-my-own-time type shit, she says. “But now I’m living with my partner; I’m happy most of the time. I’m in such a different place.”

The accompanying video for the new single has a cute and carefree energy (as well as a chess game, yo-yo-ing and the best LEGO flower arrangement) and was co-directed by Webster and said partner Booth.

“This song feels all over the place but at the same time it tells a story so simple and understandable. Me not getting my security deposit back from my landlord, my partner’s family forgetting who I am because they were drunk, wanting to be in a rock band with Booth…. it almost sounds like a mad lib at first sight, but it just works” – Faye Webster

Webster started recording the rest of album right before the COVID-19 pandemic, but with last year’s lockdowns she had to get creative about her approach to recording. Many of the vocals were recorded in her own bedroom using Garageband, resulting in an intimate feel on many of the tracks.

The comically colloquial album title gives us a taste of the humour and personality that shines through Webster’s music, with its colourful, atypical lyricism and tales of seemingly mundane themes and pastimes. Audiences both adore and relate to the honesty in her music.
