With a much anticipated album ‘Mostly Sunny’ due out on 16 March, Sydney’s Flowertruck have released a second single ‘Come Across’. As we noted in our review of Flowertruck’s first single ‘Good Enough For Now’, Flowertruck display a certain twee ingredient, a sense of innocence and a hint of gaucheness yet a divine mastery of melody, and this is even more apparent in the new release:
It is refreshing to hear an Australian twang just as it is refreshing to hear such an unabashed joyful jangle and bounce in the song. This song has a spine though – driven by piano but with an underlying distortion and a combative chorus. Singer Charles Rushworth says “The seeds of the song were spread when I realised I’d done the impossible and killed all of these indoor-plants that had been entrusted to me. It’s wanting to repair a relationship with someone while worrying about your capacity to do that. ‘Come Across’ is my attempt at an olive branch.”.
More than their earlier single, this song shows a tougher quality and a different, more punky side to the band while maintaining a certain self-deprecating larrikin sense of humour that is quintessentially Australian.
