Track: Gary Olson – Giovanna Please

There’s some story behind the new album from Ladybug Transistor man Gary Olson. Persuaded by two Norwegian brothers to make a record over the course of eight years in two locations – Hayland, Norway and Flatbush Brooklyn. Over this time Gary would visit Ole and Jorn Åleskjær and record basic sketches of songs in their barn studio, which Olsen would then add vocals, horns and strings, before handing it back to Ole to finish.

With the record out on May 29th, Olsen has released a single ‘Giovanna Please’ this coming Monday (4th May). It’s this sort of mixture between the classic arrangement/songwriting of James Taylor / Glenn Campbell, and the sweet charm of Belle and Sebastian. It’s a little gem of a track, wrapped up in melody and decorated with Olsons trumpet, these soaring strings and just the right amount of melancholy and hope to make you sit back and realise that even in these dark lockdown times, there’s still hope.
