From what must be a contender for the album title of the year – ‘Sometimes depressed … but always antifascist’ – Icelandic duo BSÍ have released two fantastic singles that are complete polar opposites in style, yet joined by a certain aesthetic that binds them completely.
In fact the singles represent the different sides of the album itself. Side one’s ’25Lue’ is ‘sometimes depressed’ (and therefore more melancholic) while on Side 2 ‘Dónakallalagið’ is the always antifascist’: loud and energetic.
’25Lue’ is a dreamy ambient multi textured reverie with an exquisite Studio Ghibli clip for the lyric video.
‘Dónakallalagið’ on the other hand is a wild oscillating ride – chaotic and unhinged, a rampant bass line and vocal gymnastics that astound:
The band’s name could either be a reference to Reykjavík’s grey and dull central bus terminal BSÍ – or an acronym for ‘Brussels Sprouts International. The duo of Silla Thorarensen (drums & vocals) & Julius Pollux Rothlaender (bass guitar & toe-synths) are fascinating – emerging from Iceland’s flourishing DIY/DIT (=do-it-together) scene these days.
