Once a wanderer in the dreamy, folk wilderness, Julia Stone has well and truly shaken off the delicate gossamer of ballads past. Single Fire in Me from forthcoming album Sixty Summers is evocative, energetic and seemingly powered by electric, Goldfrapp-esque propulsion. The song was co-written with songwriter/producer Dann Hume and features a Bond-like string section by album co-producer Thomas Bartlett (Doveman). The result, along with Stone’s charged, coquettish vocals is a true summoning of inner-strength.
Stone says of the song: “I love the feeling when the music sounds like what the lyrics mean.”
Fire In Me was an international collaboration between Sydney (Hume), New York (Bartlett), Los Angeles (Annie Clark aka St Vincent) and Melbourne (the horns were recorded at Sing Sing studios). It follows four tracks already released from the Sixty Summers album: We All Have (feat. Matt Berninger), Dance, Unreal and Break.
The album itself took five years to record and was shaped profoundly by its key collaborators. Production/songwriting wizard Thomas Bartlett and musician Annie Clark were the ones who really helped Stone realize the album’s pop vision, writing and recording over 30 demos at Bartlett’s studio in New York. Sixty Summers is a world unto itself, one in which Stone explores fire, fury, love, lust and longing.
