Laura Mac‘s new single ‘Don’t Know What I’m Thinking’ is a effervescent blast of sonic goodness, with a hyper kinetic disco shuffle in a paean to bacchanalian excess. This Sunshine Coast band certainly knows how to bottle the sun’s rays and spray serotonin over the most light-deprived individual.
The sound is all blistering pop and high-stepping pace, filled with a sense of hedonism and abandoned joy. Surely something we could all do with right now. The band’s Laura Maclachlan makes no bones about this track:
Party, disco, dance – we’re just having fun with it! All our songs have a different vibe but I feel like we’ve kept our own unique sound. DKWIT is staying up all night partying and loving every second of it. Celebrate every chance you get, party with your mates and dance ‘til you drop… High 5!!
The sheer ebullience in the track was the result of a degree of spontaneity. Maclachlan recounts:
The original idea for this song was one minute of music sent to us by a good friend of ours. I heard it once and immediately knew what the hook/chorus was going to be. Couple of hours later Zac had arranged a whole song. Couple of drinks later we’d written and recorded all of the vocals. It just poured out of us.. it didn’t take long at all. It’s true that writing about what you know is the easiest thing to do and it’s worked a charm for us so far.
The accompanying video, filmed & directed by Colin Jeffs (Jesswar, Yours Truly, Casey Barnes), perfectly captures the sense of untrammeled joy with its Day-Glo colors. Put your sunglasses and dance shoes on for this one:

Making this video was just lovely. We had Colin Jeffs film/direct it at our local car wash and invited all our favorite people down for a dance. We had neon lights, bubbles, wet shirts, dancing shoes, motorbikes and our friend Lockie’s sweet black convertible. Our main man Eli pulled through as the spirited, seductive star that graced our video with endless style and sass. We were all wrecked the next day but, damn, it was worth it! Officially the craziest, sexiest, most fabulous car wash ‘round town.
