TRACK: Madmess – ‘Ignition’: Portuguese psych trio sign and reissue debut EP

Madmess

HASSLE RECORDS, home to such guitar assault squads as raging post-feminist outfit Petrol Girls and Belgian hardcore/mathrock band Brutus, has enticed a blurrily excellent act through its doors: the London-based Portuguese psych trio Madmess.

The label begins its relationship with the trio – guitarist and vocalist Sam Paio, bassist Vasco Vasconcelos, and drummer-cum-vocalist Luis Moura – by reissuing the band’s self-titled debut four-tracker on April 9th next year.

The label stated: “We’re delighted to be reissuing the debut EP by the rather excellent Madmess from Portugal. Their music is a perfect mix of trippy pysch and stoner. Right up our street!”.

Madmess hail from Porto, getting together in 2016 to investigate a fusion of Sixties’ psych, Seventies’ prog and a more current stoner groove.

They moved to the UK in September 2017 and recorded their debut EP at Skyhammer Studio in Wales. That record was originally released by Drone Rock Records only this April on clear vinyl with black and gold splatter; fair to say, already prices are heading north on that pretty thing.

Take a listen to the glorious crunching powerchords and riff odysseys and you’ll know they’re well on course. There’s nothing more we need do than get in their slipstream.

The trio say: “We really appreciate what Hassle has been doing for the music scene in the past 15 years and we’re thrilled to be working with them.”

Madmess will release their debut album in 2021.

The EP is available now digitally and Hassle will be repressing the sold out vinyl; you can whack your order in here
