TRACK: MUZZ – BROKEN TAMBOURINE

Broken Tambourine is the first official single from Muzz via Matador. Muzz being a new project of Paul Banks (Interpol), Josh Kaufman (producer/multi-instrumentalist and one third of Bonny Light Horseman), and Matt Barrick (drummer of Jonathan Fire*Eater, The Walkmen, and Fleet Foxes’ touring band).

We were introduced to the new indie supergroup when the track – “Bad Feeling” anonymously appeared online. It announced something intriguing with its guitar led melody and stop start percussion and Banks easily recognisable vocals on the heartbreak register.

Broken Tambourine changes things with its haunting beauty and more chilled out feel compared to “Bad Feeling”. The three members each bring their own flavour to the track. With Bank’s aching vocals and Barrick’s simple pounding back beat. Kaufman is left filling in the gaps with a sombre piano opening theme and bursts of guitar.

The track opens with Kaufman on piano sounding like the end of a war film before the poppies and bird song. The drums take over leading the track and paving way for the vocals which fit so damn perfectly with the mood of the track. These three really should be making music together. Thankfully they are and what great sounding music it is.
