Track: Pastel Coast – ‘Distance’: summery dream pop from the Calais coasts

Pastel Coast

HAILING from the shores of Boulogne-sur-mer, on the French north coast, Pastel Coast are on land, looking out over the waves; as the Cocteau Twins once said with dreamy ecstasy, “Sea, Swallow Me”.

Led by Quentin Isidore, the band have one maritime-inflected album under their belts, 2019’s Hovercraft, which is bookended by the title track and “Eau”.

They’re pretty much ready to release their second album – it’s just days away, really, coming out through the joint offices of US indie Shelflife and Groover Obsessions on June 4th; and their latest single, “Distance”, draws on Gallic influences such as late Air and Phoenix, splices that with their own dreamy glimmer and twist on the dream pop sound, glides above with a pop immaculacy, breaking down with a nice touch of pure pop yearning, flies once more.

If you haven’t heard the Requin Chagrin track we posted a few days ago, you ought – go have a peek, here; take the two in tandem and your antennae may tell you something very good is afoot on the French scene right now.

“Distance” follows last month’s strumtastic “Sunset” in enticing to you take a look at the nouvelle scène française.

Pastel Coast’s Sun will be released digitally, on limited edition CD and on trad black and limited electric blue vinyl on June 4th by Shelflife/Groover Obsessions; you can order your copy right now over at Bandcamp.
