Peckham’s Shrimp Eyes are further proof of south east London’s continuing credentials as indie art pop central. Proudly DIY in all they do, the band have been bobbing in and out of the spotlight for a while: gigging hard (pre Corona) around the essential haunts (Sebright Arms, The Waiting Rooms); landing support slots (for Gengahr’s album launch); and grabbing a BBC London Introducing Featured Artist stamp of approval.
After hunkering down to write, record and refine new music for the first half of 2020, Shrimp Eyes are ready to release a new single ‘Straight Up’. A wry comment on social pressures, awkwardness and feeling out of place, the song rattles with anguish and resignation. Pushed along by an agile bassline and washed with those jangling dreamy guitars which then zoom around the chorus, the track holds together like all good songs should. Think Heavenly Recordings, shades of the Pastels, chart phase Boo Radleys plus an Orielles’ sparkle and you get the drift.
No wonder Steve Lamacq has picked up on them. Shrimp Eyes are a band to look out for….
