Track: Silverbacks – Muted Gold

Quirky and bubbly, angular and slightly off-kilter: Dublin’s Silverbacks have released a fantastic new single ‘Muted Gold’ that is eccentric, bold and highly enjoyable. Think of Talking Heads (maybe more Tom Tom Club), Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend with the slightly unhinged singing and idiosyncratic guitar picking style that I always associate with the late great South African guitarist Johnny Clegg.

The song undermines your expectations with its intermittent euphoric bursts of vocals and danceable rhythm. The accompanying video is a delight to watch. Singer guitarist Daniel O’Kelly comments on the accompanying video:

The video is loosely inspired by early Stereolab music videos. It’s a collection of clips from a few band outings we had near our practice space before the lockdown began. Fun fact, Peadar (Kearney) used to work in a bowling alley. Despite not having played in years he scored 192 on the day we brought the camera.

It also shows a band that has a self-deprecatory sense of humour and an indelible charm. Yet another brilliant band from Dublin.

‘Muted Gold’ is off the band’s forthcoming album ‘Fad’ due out on 17 July though Central Tones, which can be pre-ordered here.

Silverbacks are:

Daniel O’Kelly – Vocals/Guitar
Kilian O’Kelly – Guitar/Vocals
Emma Hanlon – Bass/Vocals
Peadar Kearney – Guitar
Gary Wickham – Drums

Previous Premiere: Unruly Girls - Black Love (Video)
