Melbourne-based band with origins in Hobart, Squid Fishing, have released a new single ‘Elevator’ that perfectly captures a laconic antipodean attitude in a fresh and evocative tone. It’s part punk, part folk and infused with a sense of delicate longing and regret with its unabashed Australian accent and changes in pace.
Singer Ethan Groombridge says of the lyrics:
I was on my break at the nightclub I was currently working at back in Tasmania & had been in a bit of a slump for a week or two and lyrics kind of just fell out onto my phone screen in a little never ending note I have.
The headspace I was in at the time was certainly a strange one, I was constantly battling my moods and was never quite sure what was just around the corner. The lyrics touch on the struggle with accepting adult-hood & responsibility and not having the liberty to always do what you want to do.
I hope that this song may provide some comfort during a troubling time.
