Track: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – ‘Tally Ho’

THE PROLIFIC psych machines that are Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have returned with “Tally Ho”, an infectiously exuberant track with the band’s generous zeal of riffage and rhythmic pummel.

“Tally Ho” orbits the realm of such Crumpets’ belters as “Gallop To Southport” and “Keen For Kick Ons?”, while also swimming in the mercurial flourishes which the Aussie greats seem to increasingly seep their music in.

Where frontman Jack McEwan’s previous lyrical content has revelled in the existentialism of a touring musician’s medical woes, or his love of his grandfather’s fantastical stringed-instrument, “Tally Ho” sees a lavishly hooky, spontaneous, conversational intonation. This vocal style, with the already lethal rapidity of the instrumentation, makes for a overwhelmingly joyous current.

This spontaneity may be attributed to the track’s origins, in representing the “classic fable of late night gonzo talks on copious amounts of chemical enthusiasm.” McEwan goes on to say how he “wanted the lyrics to feel sporadic and impulsive”.

“A sober third party might assume you’re both morons; but between the constant waves of inebriated dialogue you feel like you’ve activated God mode and are only a few online classes away from becoming a favoured politician that will solve all the world’s problems,” Jack says.

With the band recently completing their fourth album, as well as performing virtually at Australia’s SOTA Festival, they have very much remained triumphant and undefeated by this year. Nonetheless, the upcoming album has been profoundly affected by current events, yet not in an entirely negative way.

McEwan explains how the vast amounts of time impacted the writing process of the new album, saying “…I felt free to create. My writing process became ritualistic; every morning starting with a small walk to the local bottle shop at 11am and writing whatever flowed, allowing myself to design in all styles without boundaries, and not trying to theme the album early on.

“I haven’t had the luxury of writing this way since the first record, which I spent almost a year working on. It felt like I was myself again, creating without opinion or constraints. I was gliding through weeks with a day seeming to pass.”

The PPC’s forthcoming record, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, arrives on February 5th next year. The album cover is as uniquely brilliant as the tracks that have foreshadowed the album and promises to provide ample tracks perfect for the intimate, sweaty venues the band revel in.
