Track: The Lazy Eyes – Cheesy Love Song

Everything old may well be new again – there is a degree of amusement that a fair percentage of popular contemporary music is very similar to stuff that has come before. But sometimes music is like Shakespeare: it’s not the about the story itself but the way it’s being told.

Coming from Sydney, the debut single from the immensely talented teenage band called The Lazy Eyes, ‘Cheesy Love Song’, will immediately recall a vintage psychedelic-era Beatles, morphing via 10CC and the Kinks to the more esoteric version of XTC and more recent contemporaries such as Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips. Anyone remember the Korgis? Everybody’s indeed go to learn sometimes.

Going through movements from blissed out chilled piano-backed musings to an epic string-laden psychedelic trip, this is a song that demands attention, a song that one can’t help wondering about the Darkness-esque fine line between pastiche and tribute, mockery and love. A deliberate absence of style is a style itself, and Lazy Eyes have nailed this down perfectly in their video with their dress and their, yes, fascinating retro haircuts.

Above all, it is wonderfully crafted song – fresh, bright and, despite its backward glances, innovative and intriguing.

You can get the single here. The Lazy Eyes have recently supported The Temper Trap in Australia and will be playing in the UK at the Great Escape Festival in the UK in May.

Lazy Eyes are:

Harvey Geraghty (vocals, guitar, keyboard)
Itay Shachar (vocals, guitar)
Blake Wise (bass guitar)
Noah Martin (drum kit)

They have been playing together since they were 15, having met each other while attending a local performing arts high school. The future is bright.
