NEW YORK’S Still Brothers, who announced their signing on the dotted line for Hoxton’s Lewis Recordings back in midsummer with the uplifting jazz breaks of “The Deep” (we took a butcher’s, here) have just dropped their second delicious missive, “Wake Up”, for which they’ve called on the services of Brazilian cantora Marina B. Take a listen with us.
The duo, Andrew LeCoche and Evan Heinze, started putting this new track together on “in a bedroom somewhere in the TriState area … on a cloudy day in the winter of 2019”, fusing a fine and soulful lo-fi organ, a pleasingly fat break and some atmospheric spoken word sampling to give Marina B the ideal atmospheres over which to drape a little lambent honey. It falls out somewhere where Khruangbin are gettin’ the groove on with Money Mark.
Reportedly, the track came to life when Marina heard the track in her sleep and thought of the lyrics as she woke up; its first line eerily warning, in the early days of 2020, that “the world has transformed, the rules have changed” and “[she] will have to get used to it.”
With writing the first string to her creative bow, Marina has only begun making music since moving to the Big Apple from the city of Natal, in the north east of Brazil, and hooking up with the Bros. Let’s look forward to hearing more from all three.
Just to add a little more aural magic, “Wake Up” was mixed by Will Dorey, aka Lewis Recordings’ very fine Afro-downbeat guitar explorer Skinshape.
