You should never judge a book by its cover. Yep; can agree with that. But when it comes to music, should you judge a band by their name? I’m not sure on this one, but one thing I am sure of, is that I’ve always thought ‘A Place To Bury Strangers’ was a great name for a band. In fact, call me fickle, but that’s what first brought them to my attention 5 or 6 years ago, and not only is it a great name, they are also, in my opinion, a great band (If you need proof, check out – ‘I Know I’ll See You ’, ‘So Far Away’ and ‘You Are The One’.)
Here’s another conundrum for you – does a good single warrant a good video? And does a good video equal a good single? Well, if you’re talking about A Place To Bury Strangers, the answer is yes. Latest single ‘Straight’ and its accompanying video are both, for want of another word, great.
The video is directed by Brook Linder. With more than a gentle nod to 80’s stuttering AI half-wit, Max Headroom, the authentic feel of an interrupted TV signal was achieved by dubbing the effects to VHS and then running them through analogue synthesizers to bring it all in line to match the band’s analogue effected sound.
‘Straight’ is the first single to be released from their upcoming album ‘Transfixiation’ (out 16th February 2015 on Dead Oceans). The album see’s the New York noise-rock specialists commit the intensity of their live performance to record. As the band put it…”That’s the most intense fear and feeling—when you go to a show and you’re actually scared, or you can palpably feel the danger in the music. It’s a gutter kinda vibe; everything about it is icky and evil and dangerous.” Sounds… well… great!
A Place To Bury Strangers will tour extensively across the U.S. and Europe next year including a performance at Austin Psych Fest.
