We live in a world where events move so quickly. On a daily basis, we’re assailed from all sides by information and news from around the world. It can become a laborious task to try and sift through all the static. It’s often difficult to find time to stop, take stock and remember what’s important in life. In Jon Mikel Caballero’s new film, The Incredible Shrinking Wknd, his protagonist is in a race against time to save her relationship.

About to turn 30 and still living at home, Alba (Iria del Río) drifts through life; no job or responsibilities and reliant on her father. To celebrate her birthday, she arranges for her boyfriend Pablo (Adam Quintero) and their friends to accompany her for a weekend at the family’s old summer house. However, she’s shocked when he suddenly breaks up with her. The next day she arrives at the house again and everything starts over.

The Incredible Shrinking Wknd pitches Alba into an intriguing scenario. Whilst initially she thinks they’re stuck in a loop; it soon becomes clear that time is running out. This makes for a clever and tense sci-fi thriller which plays around with different scenarios before focussing on one clear goal. Alba’s efforts to rectify her relationships just cause new problems. The Incredible Shrinking Wknd is a well-made and brilliantly acted battle against the clock.

The Incredible Shrinking Wknd screens again at Fantasia Festival 2019 on 22 July.
