News: The Charlatans reveal music box in support of ‘The Music Venue Trust’

Who doesn’t love those little wind up music boxes of yesteryear, and also The Charlatans anthem ‘The Only One I Know’. Well certainly not us here at Backseat Mafia, and in our offices (well, house), I have a resplendent Richard Hawley music box on the shelves, and my battered 12” of The only one I know has had thousands of spins since its release some 30 years ago.

Arranged by Jon Trier from Richard Howley’s band, the music box is a new venture that came out of Lockdown ‘The Official Music Box Company’, and where better to go next (well, other than the aforementioned Richard Hawley ones) than with the first Charting single from the legendary Charlatans. Taken from their 1990 debut album ‘Some Friendly’, it set Tim Burgess and his band off on a journey that spans 22 top 40 singles and countless albums, tours and appearances since.

It also seems somehow fitting that Tim Burgess, now firmly establishes as the king of twitter and Lord Protector of all things musical over lockdown should feature. Since March 20th when lockdown and true pandemic led to the cancellation of all live music, Tim began hosting his twitter listening parties. Now, after 700 parties in the first year alone, Tim has used them to support the return to live music and raising money to help support the Music Venue Trust charity, which has helped countless live venues to remain viable over these difficult months.

Money from The Charlatans music box will be used to support this worthwhile charity (see www.musicvenuetrust.com for more details), and the limited 1st edition music box with individually numbered postcard is available from Monday 20th September.
