Scottish neon-rock band Vukovi release new music video for their single ‘Weirdo’, which features on their self-titled debut album, released last month. The song itself highlights the battle between fitting in or standing out, and the consequences that may arise from either option. Do you lose yourself in the crowd, or get bullied for being a ‘weirdo’? Vukovi want to give their fans the strength to keep their individuality and fight the haters along the way.

“This video is about raising awareness to the victimisation and cultural impact that bullying, and more specifically cyber bullying, has on young people in today’s digital age,” frontwoman Janine Shilstone explains.

“The idea came after chatting to numerous fans at our shows and learning about the hell they go through at school because they like “weird music” or dress differently. They would tell me that our music made them feel like they fit in somewhere and our shows were a place to meet likeminded people.”

The video shows a ‘weird’ girl entering an audition, wearing bright colours and blue hair, standing in front of three mean girls who merely laugh and judge her appearance. Not all is lost, however, as our Weirdo gains confidence to remove her jacket and curse the bullies, causing them to vomit neon colours and look as ugly as their souls. The Weirdo wins, feeling stronger in her identity and defeating her enemies.

Janine adds, “if this video makes any one victim not feel alone, then we’ve done our job.” If there’s one thing Vukovi have taught me in recent months, it’s this: “Embrace the weirdo in you.”

Vukovi are going on tour this May & June, joined by none other than Press To Meco and Inklings (for selected dates). The band will also be hitting a number of festivals this summer, including Slam Dunk, 2000 Trees, Y Not and Reading & Leeds.

The shirt our Weirdo wears in the music video is now for sale via Janine’s clothing line BITCHCRVFT. There’s only 15 available, all individually numbered and hand painted. Get yours here: bitchcrvft.bigcartel.com
