Griff & Michele Revive Reggae Classic ’54-46′ with Joyful, Star-Studded Cover

Griff and Michele return with a joyful, personality-packed rendition of the legendary ska/rocksteady anthem “54-46” by Toots and the Maytals—one of reggae’s most iconic and influential tracks. Following the success of their feel-good holiday single “Christmas Smile,” this new cover builds on the duo’s charm and musical chemistry, delivering a version that brims with energy, warmth, and reverence for the genre’s roots.

Recorded at the aptly named Fantastic Sunshine Corner Studios, the track is a vibrant collaboration between Rock Radio UK/New Dawn FM DJ, author, and multi-hyphenate Griff Griffiths, co-host and singer Michele ‘with one L’, and renowned producer Steve ‘Smiley’ Barnard (known for his work with Robbie Williams, Joe Strummer, and Tony Visconti). Together, they capture the upbeat spirit of the original while injecting their own playful spin, bringing the song into 2024 with groove and grit.

What makes this version particularly special is the lineup of guest vocalists pulled from across the Mod/Ska spectrum. Featuring members from The Chords UK, The Syndicate, The Dirty Strangers, and many more, the track becomes a mini-reunion of genre greats. Their contributions—layered, punchy, and overflowing with charisma—help turn “54-46” into a celebration of both heritage and community.

The music video, shot in Brighton around the iconic “Quadrophenia Alley,” adds a cinematic, fun-loving narrative to the track, casting Griff and Michele in a “love story” that doubles as a nod to ska culture’s deep roots in British youth history. Visually nostalgic and musically infectious, the video encapsulates the project’s central charm: it’s about joy, connection, and the timelessness of a great tune.

“54-46” also arrives on red 12″ vinyl, bundled with Griff and Michele’s previous singles “Christmas Smile,” “Gogo Coco,” and “I Had a Dream,” and is available via Sounds of The Suburbs record shop—adding an extra layer of collectability for fans of physical media and retro formats. Griff’s colorful life story (as a market trader, punk documentarian, and all-around creative force) adds depth to this project. Alongside Michele, who matches his energy beat for beat, the duo offer more than just music—they’re crafting cultural moments that are as sincere as they are fun.

This reimagining of “54-46” is both a tribute and a testament to the power of collaboration, and a reminder that some classics never lose their bounce—especially when given new life by artists with passion, history, and heart.
