In the midst of his Laneway Festival run across Australia and Aotearoa, Alex G – one of the most exciting acts to bless the lineup and sideshow circuit this year (IMO) – brought his signature brand of heartwarming lo-fi to the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall.
The unique setup, open wide with cascading grandstands in every direction, created an intimate amphitheater effect, a far cry from the slightly muddy grasslands of Laneway the day before. Alex G and his band stood at the center of it all, encircled by devotees who’d packed every available sightline.
True to form, they immediately dove into a full set thick with deep cuts and crowd favourites. The decision to drop ‘Gretel‘ within the first ten minutes sent a massive wave of recognition, then immense joy, rippling through the surrounding stands. The vibes, as they say, were immaculate.
There was a sweetness to every factor of the evening, all of it culminating in the joyous indie movie soundtrack that is Alex G’s discography – rife with feelings of nostalgia for your childhood treehouse, the suburbs, and heartbreak.
