A capacity crowd at the Metro waits expectantly for the return of Parquet Courts to Sydney. The crowd is in high spirits and I spot a girl vibing to the glorious rhythms of Fela Kuti whilst we wait for the band to take the stage. And then suddenly in a blaze of psychedelic lighting they are here! Austin Brown, like the love child of a deranged hippie scientist and Ray Manzarak uses his keyboards and synths to produce aural loops that are perpetuated by and built upon by Sean Yeaton and Max Savage. Meanwhile, Andrew Savage lurks in the shadows, every now and then bursting into the spotlight to deliver some excoriating guitar licks. Parquet Courts are impossible to define (my companion says they’re a cross between the Doors and the Clash) but absolutely thrilling to see live.
