Ben Böhmer‘s Bloom Live Tour hit Eora/Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Friday night, a sold-out celebration of his latest album release. Walking in, it was clear that Böhmer’s music draws a diverse crowd, with outfits ranging from sleek electronic rave-babe fits to earthy, bush doof-inspired ensembles. His reach into both worlds is undeniable, bringing together those who thrive on melodic beats and others who find solace in the immersive soundscapes.

I was met with a stranger offering directions followed by an equally casual offer of shrooms, further ahead, another attendee’s baggy of white powder met the bottom of security’s bin. Next door, Cold Chisel’s greatest hits echoed from The Showring in a surreal contrast between the retro Australian classics and the futuristic world we had stepped into.

Usually framed with grandstands, Hordern Pavilion was opened up for maximum movement, creating a wide-open dance floor under cranked air conditioning that somehow couldn’t stop the humidity from creeping in.

Ben Böhmer emerged, seated behind the piano, with the crowd held in a quiet, reverent hush. The soft, emotive tones of his intro set the scene for ‘Bloom’. As he guided the audience through the opening melodies, you could sense something building, like a slow-growing energy. His ability to start small, almost fragile, then slowly infuse warmth and vibrancy into the atmosphere was a work of art.

As the set evolved, so did the crowd. The subtle piano notes transitioned into lush, layered synths, each pulse sending ripples of excitement through the room. Böhmer’s ability to captivate with restraint and then gradually expand into full, vibrant sounds felt like watching a flower bloom in real-time. Each beat felt intentional, and every melody was crafted to wrap around the audience like a warm embrace.

The energy shifted, no longer subdued, the crowd swayed and moved as if they were part of a living, breathing organism. The ball of light Böhmer had begun to weave at the start enveloped everyone, connecting us all. It was a beautiful display of how electronic music, when done with such care and precision, can create an almost spiritual experience.

The humid air, the smiles, and the collective euphoria made it clear that Ben Böhmer is a conductor of moments – a master of building connection through sound. His multi-instrumental talent shone through as he blended organic and electronic elements seamlessly. It wasn’t about heavy drops or pounding bass; it was about subtle growth, and Böhmer crafted a journey that, by the end, left everyone in the room feeling like they’d been part of something transformative.

Ben Böhmer’s Bloom Live Tour continues across the UK and Europe next month.
