Even after four decades in the game, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) prove they’re still a force to be reckoned with. The Enmore Theatre is heaving—fans spilling into the foyer, a sold-out crowd pulsing with anticipation. OMD are in Australia for the first time since 1987. But this is not just another nostalgia trip. OMD are here to remind Sydney why they remain one of Britain’s most beloved synth-pop exports.

With over 40 million albums sold and a discography stacked with some of the most iconic synth-pop anthems of the ‘80s, OMD’s influence is undeniable. Tonight, they arrive riding high on the success of their latest studio album, Bauhaus Staircase, which stormed to No.2 in the UK charts. A record born in lockdown, it’s their most overtly political statement yet.

From the moment Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys take the stage, the energy is electric. Opening with a synth-heavy intro that sends shivers down the spine, they launch into a set that’s both retro-futuristic and fiercely relevant. The audience erupts at the shimmering euphoria of “Souvenir”, the haunting beauty of “Maid of Orleans” and the unmistakable pulse of “Electricity”. The new material from Bauhaus Staircase showcases OMD’s refusal to stand still—propulsive beats, cinematic textures, and politically charged lyrics proving they’re still pushing boundaries.

McCluskey, a perpetual livewire, throws himself into every note, his distinctive dance moves as wonderfully unhinged as ever. Humphreys, cool and composed, steers the synth-driven ship with precision. It’s a thrilling juxtaposition—one that has kept OMD’s dynamic alive for decades.

As the night reaches its climax, the crowd is swaying and surrendering to the synth-laden dreamscape. OMD might be veterans of the genre, but tonight, they play with the fervour of a band with everything still to prove. It’s a masterclass in synth-pop brilliance, a reminder that even after all these years, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark are still lighting up the future.

OMD move to Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane next, head HERE for tickets.
