Let’s set the scene. Saturday 22nd June, red hot day and 11,500 ‘party goers’ descend on Temple Newson in Leeds for a day of 80s music.

What a magical day this was set to be, with a stellar line up off some of the greatest artists from the 80s. DJ Andy Crane was on hand to keep the crowds entertained and was the host for the entire day.

It’s now ready to start and what better way to kick things off then with the amazing Toyah Willcox treating us all to hit after hit. At 66, she was still all over the stage, giving 100% for a 20 min spot. Now the crowd was warmed up, it was time for another power house female in the form of Claire Grogan, (Altered Images), who was then followed by Kim Appleby (Mel & Kim). Absolutely brilliant performances from both!

The boys had big boots to fill following the outstanding performances from the ladies, so they set off with one of the biggest names from the 80’s… Jason Donovan. Jason went on stage wearing a cracking pair of leather trousers. He instantly regretted his wardrobe choice for the day due to the 28-degree heat! Big mistake and he let everyone know. Jason did a full hour set of all his hits especially for us.

All day we were treated amazing acts. China Crisis, Pat Sharp, XTC, Go West, Level 42, UB40 feat Ali Campbell.

For me though, there was only one band! ‘From the Jam’ treating us all to an hour of non-stop hits. Russel Hastings, who has been with the band for 20 years now, sounds amazing and has a very similar voice to Paul Weller. Unfortunately, the original Bass Player Bruce Foxton was unable to play due to ill heath so Gary Simons stood in and what an amazing job he did.

This one-day festival goes to show that 80’s music is still very much alive with young and old.

I had forgotten just how many hits these guys had, (must be my age), but everyone who attended had a truly amazing day.

A massive well done and thank you to all the staff and volunteers of ‘Lets Rock’ for all their hard work putting this show together. You guys’ ROCK.
