US prog rock giants, Coheed & Cambria, along with special guests from Canada, the proudly independent Intervals, absolutely rocked The Odeon with a thunderous roar of a mix of instrumental progressive metal of Intervals blended with the conceptual metal that Coheed & Cambria bring to each and every show.

The two bands were playing as a Monolith Festival sideshow, with Coheed & Cambria performing Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness in its’ entirety.

Intervals played first and warmed the crowd nicely with their darkly inventive, instrumental songs, which while considered progressive, also contain heavier and moodier elements touching on doom metal. They were genuinely appreciative of their first time in Tasmania, and the building crowd certainly enjoyed what to most, would have been their first taste of this band.

Intervals Gallery:

Following a short break, the main act took to the stage to great applause from the 500 strong crowd and moved their way sinuously through their third album which was released nearly 20 years ago in 2005 – an album which contained 15 tracks and ran in at around 71 minutes.

Having never seen them live before, I was really taken with their performance and sound, and I have to say that I really enjoyed the clean vocal style of Sanchez, one which reminded me of the legendary Geddy Lee of Rush fame…….so much so that I went and bought the album the following morning.

It is interesting to note that Coheed & Cambria’s albums are all concept albums (aside 2015’s The Color Before The Sun) which are based on a science fiction story about The Amory Wars, an ongoing series of graphic novels and comics penned by frontman, Claudio Sanchez.
