Ahead of the release of his debut album Sunset Boulevard on July 11th, South London’s neo soul riser McCabe offers a cinematic glimpse into his world with the album’s title track, out now. Blending golden-age Hollywood mystique with experimental soul, dub, and west coast synth textures, the track sets the tone for a ten-song journey through love, ambition, disillusionment, and dreamlike surrealism.
We caught up with McCabe to find out more about them ahead of the album release.
Give us a potted history of yourself
I started writing songs properly when I was 10. I was in a duo punk band, we made about 100 songs but never played live. Then at 17 I played in an indie band ripping off The Strokes and The Libertines (we were once supported by Shame). Then I had a spoken word solo project, a dark post-punk solo project and I was also in a short lived trip-hop band that also never played live. Finally in 2020 I found my soul inspired sound which is now McCabe.
Who inspired you to start making music
Myself – I’ve always been very creative – drawing, making films etc. So writing songs was just another component. No one in my family played any instruments. But my Mum encouraged me to be creative at a very early age and my Dad showed me a lot of great music really young – Björk, Massive Attack and Prince – they were my favourites in primary school.
And the one or maybe two records that inspired you artistically
Maxinquaye and Pet Sounds.
If you’re trying to explain who you sound like to someone who’s never heard you, what do you say
The English Yves Tumor.
What can we expect from you in the near future
My album is out on 11 July. You can expect more albums (hopefully another in 2026), no EPs (not a fan) and some secret side projects possibly.
Tell us your favourite records that are rocking your headphones/tour bus/stereo
Love Made Trees – Loaded Honey
Força Bruta – Jorge Ben Jor
Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of The Crystals – The Crystals
Tresor – Oslo Twins
