With their debut single ‘Love Me’ (read our review here) recently released and some great gigs under their belt. The Wednesday Flowers are at the top of the list of bands to watch in 2025. We at Backseat Mafia wanted to say we were there “at the beginning” before they get too big for our lowly pages.

Give us a potted history of the band

We formed the band after meeting on a Wednesday in November 2023. Our first gig was for our college’s Battle of the Bands, which kicked off our career. The first proper headline gig was in January 2024, when we played NE Volume. It’s been more or less a gig every week since then. Our favourite gigs have been at the Georgian Theatre when we opened for Loose Articles or the Last Train Home festival.

Recently, though, the ‘Love Me’ release gig was a huge accomplishment for us. Being able to organise our own event and pull in our own crowd was a massive success for us, and we are really proud and grateful for everyone who helped out and attended.

Who inspired you to start making music

As a band, we have been very inspired by the work of Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and NewDad. This influence is seen in our song ‘Love Me’.

And the one or two records that inspired you artistically

I’d say instrumentally, the song that inspired us the most is ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley, which is such a beautiful song. The chords in it really inspired us, alongside the repeated vocals in the chorus, and really helped shape the song for us. The chords we used in ‘Love Me’ aren’t the same but do sound similar through the style of playing and the timings, and overall, instrumentally we really took on a Jeff Buckley kinda vibe.

If you’re trying to explain who you sound like to someone who has never heard you, what do you say

Someone once called us the female Fontaines DC, but we’re not trying to replicate a sound as when we make music together;, it’s more of a process of deciding what we like the sound of. However, we definitely have musical influences that inevitably shaped our sound. A lot of people have stated our music sounds gothic and ethereal.

Tell us about your new single

Love Me tells the story of longing for someone to be yours. The verse talks about the soft sides of a relationship: holding hands or falling asleep next to each other. The chorus changes to the
yearning for loving, the emotional side of the relationship. The song is about craving the experience of being loved. We produced the song with our music teacher, Sam Kennedy, and we think he did a great job! We recorded the instruments and vocals with him and he did all the mixing with our creative input.

Where can we get hold of it

Every Streaming service possible as we went through distrokid! You can also add it to your instagram stories and other social media platforms!

Tell us how you write

As a band we sort of write our own parts for the songs, we like to work collaboratively as we feel as though we all get a creative input in our own ways.

Tell us about your live show What would be your dream gig

The ‘Love Me’ release gig was at Teesside uni, and it was incredible. The supporting bands were insanely talented, and we really felt the support for ‘Love Me’. Our dream gig right now would probably be opening for a bigger artist on tour like Newdad, momma or Beabadoobee. We really love those artists, and it would be so fun to play shows with them.

What can we expect from you in the near future

Currently, we are working in the studio, recording some more of our songs. Hopefully, we will be releasing more soon! Until then, we will be doing shows really often. Keep up-to-date with our socials to see if you can make any!
