News: Gecko’s Ambitious Third Album ‘The Big Picture’ is a Storytelling Triumph

Renowned for his sharp lyricism and evocative storytelling, singer-songwriter, South London’s Gecko returns with his fan-funded third album, The Big Picture, his most ambitious and expansive work to date.

Producer by Mercury-nominated engineer Shuta Shinoda (Ghostpoet, Hot Chip) and an impressive array of musicians, including the legendary Phil Veacock (Jools Holland) on saxophone and clarinet, the project offers a rich sonic tapestry featuring warming string arrangements, jazz-influenced moments, and Gecko’s signature witty, heartfelt lyricism.

Inspired by the narrative songwriting of Randy Newman, The Big Picture weaves together personal reflections and character-driven tales. Tracks like ‘The Tamworth Two’ recount the true story of two runaway pigs, while ‘The Dawn Chorus’ imagines the hidden meanings behind birdsong. ‘Bowling in Madison’ offers a poignant story of an old friend’s attempt to reunite his team for one final game. These fictionalized narratives are complemented by deeply personal tracks such as ‘It’s You (That I Find),’ a charming love song set in the everyday, and ‘Family To Me,’ an ode to friendship. The album closes with ‘The Universe,’ a crooning jazz number that provides a fittingly grand epilogue.

Gecko offers insight into the creative process behind The Big Picture: “For this album, I worked with the incredible engineer/mixer Shuta Shinoda, who not only brought his technical expertise but also encouraged me to embrace the scrapbook-like quality of my home recordings. This meant incorporating organic elements like my baby niece’s coos, my Grandad’s voice, my cat’s purr, and even the sounds of gaffa tape and cardboard tubes. These textures added a unique warmth to the album.”

Among the standout tracks, ‘Lost Boys’ tells the true story of six boys from Tonga stranded on a deserted island in the 1960s—offering a heartwarming contrast to Lord of the Flies. Meanwhile, ‘Geology’ and ‘Take a Look Around’ serve as the thematic bedrock of the album, reflecting on the chaotic and overwhelming nature of modern life while also finding beauty in the randomness of existence. “However messy this world is, the life we carry is unbelievably special, and that fact is unbelievably easy to forget,” Gecko shares.

A staple of the UK music scene, Gecko has performed on major stages across the world, including Glastonbury, Latitude, the Southbank Centre, and the BAFTA-winning Sky Arts show Life & Rhymes. His engaging performances and humour-infused songwriting have garnered millions of views across TikTok and Instagram, endearing him to a broad audience.

With The Big Picture, Gecko takes a bold step forward, highlighting more of the unique song-craft that he possesses.
