After spending three decades in the shadows, nineties indie cult legends Giant Killers are back with a vengeance. Following their re-emergence this year, the band has revived their devoted fanbase and gained new followers with their electrifying blend of alt-rock nostalgia and fresh energy. Their latest single, ‘Who Am I Fooling?’, the third track from their debut album Songs For The Small Places, taps into the defiant spirit that defined their sound decades ago. With gritty guitars, tight rhythms, and a rebellious edge, Giant Killers are taking their momentous comeback to the next level.

‘Who Am I Fooling?’ showcases Giant Killers at their best, pairing driving riffs with the impeccable drumming of Prefab Sprout’s Neil Conti, whose rhythmic precision adds intensity to the track. As a piece of alt-rock revival, it’s a raw and powerful reminder of the group’s roots in the vibrant indie scene of the nineties—a discography that nearly vanished has been restored with a vigor that promises to redefine their legacy.

Adding depth to the release, Giant Killers have also unveiled two bonus tracks: a haunting piano ballad rendition of This Is The Time Of Our Lives, featuring Blur’s long-time keyboardist Diana Gutkind on baby grand piano, and an acoustic version of It’s My Time Now. The latter, a delicate teaser for what will be a fully produced track on their upcoming sophomore album set for 2025, highlights George Hutchison’s exquisite guitar work. Hutchison, formerly with the platinum-selling River City People and Scottish folk band Horse, brings a nuanced touch that underscores the band’s knack for alt-rock storytelling.

Reflecting on their long-awaited return, the band speaks to the bittersweet irony of being “introduced” after 30 years in the wings. “There’s a special kind of delight and a delicious irony in being ‘introduced’ after 30 years—it’s a potent reminder from the universe that good things may come to those who wait. Which in one sense is the principal message in our ‘debut’ album, Songs For The Small Places! With Who Am I Fooling?, we’re touching on themes of regret for opportunities not taken and the hope of future redemption—familiar territory for us. We’re hoping to build on our introduction, maybe a firm handshake or even a hug. As ever, we live in hope!”

The long journey to reclaim their masters and their legacy has been a testament to Giant Killers’ perseverance. In their heyday, they performed at iconic venues such as Glastonbury and Hyde Park and were even featured on The Big Breakfast after becoming a collectible sticker in Smash Hits. Now, with ‘Who Am I Fooling?’, Giant Killers are ready to introduce a new generation to the fierce energy, introspective lyrics, and unforgettable soundscapes that make them one of indie rock’s greatest comebacks.
