The winner of the best guitarist in the universe and nicest chap alive (by me anyway), Johnny Marr, has just announced the release of a new EP entitled ‘Fever Dreams Pt 1’ and unveiled a luminescent video for first single off the EP, the jangling, hyperactive ‘Spirit Power & Soul’. The legendary songwriter and guitarist for The Smiths has developed a relatively late but extremely fruitful solo career after decades of playing with others, and his solo material confirms a deep pop sensibility and indelible song writing craft.
‘Spirit Power and Soul’ is an effervescent and driving track with the trademark distinctive guitars ringing out with a twelve string jangle and an energised disco rhythm section. Sky high choruses are a given in any Marr composition. The video is a dynamic black and white performance with Marr’s enigmatic presence and louche delivery:
