Breakout Cork singer-songwriter James Keegan has announced the release of his debut EP, Teaching Our Teachers, arriving June 27. Ahead of the full project, he has shared the vibrant lead single, ‘Feeling Grey (Teaching Our Teachers)’.

At just 21 years old, Keegan has quickly built a reputation as one of Ireland’s most exciting emerging talents. Since January 2025, he has toured across ten countries in the UK, Europe, and the United States, supporting Geoff Tate, frontman of Queensrÿche. With four iTunes Number 1 singles to his name already, the EP continues to showcase his distinct blend of indie, folk, and pop influences.

The new single, recorded at Monique Recording Studios in Cork with producer Christian Best, combines upbeat indie instrumentation with a folk-inspired undertone. Keegan’s melodic, emotive vocals and strong central hook make the track both accessible and deeply personal.

Speaking about the track, James shares: “Feeling grey is about me growing up and reflecting on my youth as I grew to the mature age of 19! I recorded the album in Monique Recording Studios in Cork with producer Christian Best. We worked on most of the tracks ourselves and later got musicians in to share the work load. It was definitely different from my previous time in the studio, I felt more comfortable and willing to actually make things sound different to what I’m used to.”

The full EP features members of Mick Flannery’s band, signed to Oh Boy Records, the label founded by John Prine. Across its tracks, Teaching Our Teachers blends atmospheric folk-pop with a raw sense of emotion, introspection, and a longing for freedom—mirroring Keegan’s journey as a full-time independent musician.

Hailing from Cork, Keegan first caught national attention in 2023 with a spot in Whelan’s Ones to Watch. Since then, through relentless touring and a string of successful singles, he’s cultivated a dedicated following. Three of his four released singles have topped the Irish iTunes charts.

In addition to his solo career, Keegan is also a member of the Cork-based band Fire and Water. This year sees him embarking on a massive 97-date tour across the United States, which began in March, with stops at notable venues including the House of Blues in New Orleans and the Aztec Theatre in San Antonio.

He wrapped up 2024 with headline shows at Cyprus Avenue and DeBarras Folk Club his largest to date and has also headlined venues such as Little Whelan’s in Dublin and Mascara Bar in North London, known for showcasing acts like Fontaines D.C.

As he enters a pivotal year, James Keegan continues to hone his sound and vision, ready to showcase his finest work to date on the upcoming full EP.
