News: Kayak announce 2022 farewell tour dates

Legendary Dutch progressive rockers Kayak have announced their farewell tour, set to take place in April & May 2022. These shows will see them perform tracks from across their career, including their latest album ‘Out Of This World’ released in early 2021. Originally formed in 1972, this will be the last time the band tour.

Band lead Ton Scherpenzeel comments:

“It’s been a great ride but we’ve come to the end of the line. As the other band members would have liked to continue, the decision became extra difficult. And as a musician I still do enjoy playing itself. But it takes a lot more than just that to make a good tour, and circumstances for bands like us are not getting any easier. In that respect I feel I’ve reached the limit of my capabilities. And however sad it may be, I’d rather stop too early than go on too long.”

Kayak does not rule out that the band might get together again for special projects or occasions, but as a touring unit, it will be over after May 21. The last show in The Netherlands will be on May 14 in De Vorstin in Hilversum- accidentally the town where it all started back in 1972.

The full list of dates is as follows, support comes from Lesoir:

  • 22nd April – Grenswerk, Venlo, Netherlands
  • 23rd April – De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, Netherlands
  • 28th April – Oosterpoort, Groningen, Netherlands
  • 29th April – 013, Tilburg, Netherlands
  • 9th May – Islington Assembly Hall, London, UK
  • 10th May – Club Academy, Manchester, UK
  • 12th May – Das Rind, Rüsselsheim, Germany
  • 13th May – Metropool, Enschede, Netherlands
  • 14th May – De Vorstin, Hilversum, Netherlands
  • 15th May – Yard Club, Köln, Germany
  • 16th May – Spirit of 66, Verviers, Belgium
  • 18th May – Bahnhof Pauli, Hamburg, Germany
  • 19th May – Karosserifabrikken, Helsingor, Denmark
  • 20th May – Musikens Hus, Gothenburg, Sweden

‘Out Of This World’, the band’s eighteenth studio album, with 15 new tracks, spanning 70 minutes of energetic and incredibly diverse material- though still very much recognisable as Kayak. It is clear that the new found energy has gained even more momentum since Hans Eijkenaar rejoined the group. Although they were forced to cancel all tours because Ton Scherpenzeel suffered a heart attack at the end of 2019, and immediately after that because of the Covid pandemic, we’re hearing a band that, since the demise of Pim Koopman in 2009, has not sounded more together, balanced and motivated.

The current line-up of the band is as follows:

  • Ton Scherpenzeel – Keyboards, lead and backing vocals
  • Bart Schwertmann – Lead and backing vocals
  • Marcel Singor – Guitar, lead and backing vocals
  • Kristoffer Gildenlöw – Bass, lead and backing vocals
  • Hans Eijkenaar- Drums
