Laura Jean has today announced a tour in support of her upcoming album, ‘Amateurs’ which will be released on 4th November. At Backseat Mafia we have loved the three singles that have been released off the album thus far and we have not been alone in our praise. First single ‘Teenager Again‘ (featuring Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams on backing vocals) went straight in to Double J rotation. Second single ‘Too Much To Do‘ was reviewed in the Guardian UK. Recent third single ‘A Funny Thing Happened‘ is a dreamy epic with an evocative video. The record has also been covered by Brooklyn Vegan, Paper Magazine, NME, and played by Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music.

‘Amateurs’ is a follow up to Laura Jean’s 2018 album ‘Devotion’ which garnered superlative reviews from Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear and elsewhere, and made it into end of year lists for Spin, Idolator, Apple Music and more. Laura Jean also acquired some high-profile fans such as Lorde and actor Brie Larson. She did two UK/Europe tours around that album with Courtney Barnett and Aldous Harding.

‘Amateurs’ features backing vocals from Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams on three songs. Laura worked on the album with producer Tim Bruniges in Stanmore and St Peters on Gadigal Country. Erkki Veltheim contributed the string arrangements which were recorded by ‘Devotion’ producer John Lee in Naarm/Melbourne.

“Amateur means to do something for love, not money, and somehow it’s become a dirty word, shorthand for a failure. These songs arise from my acceptance that I will always be an ‘amateur’. At the same time, I was fuelled by a desire to create something inordinately luxurious and beautiful.”
