Mistletone have announced that Perfume Genius will return to Australia this year. Mike Hadreas who records and performs under the moniker Perfume Genius, will return to our shores for the first time since 2018. Perfume Genius’s Sydney show will form part of this year’s Vivid Festival.

Perfume Genius will be supported by Hand Habits aka Meg Duffy, in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

This will be an opportunity for Australian audiences to hear Perfume Genius play tracks from his last album, ‘Set My Heart On Fire Immediately’ which was released by Matador Records / Remote Control in 2020. The album was recorded in LA where Hadreas lives with his partner and musical collaborator, Alan Wyffels. ‘Set My Heart On Fire Immediately’ earned almost universal acclaim and appeared on the ‘best of’ 2020 lists of TIME Magazine, New York Times, Variety, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork, Billboard, The New Yorker, Vogue, NPR, Stereogum and others.

The album also enthralled Australian critics with Barnaby Smith of the Sydney Morning Herald writing,”13 tracks of unfailing intensity and poetry, expressed via a sonic template that is thrillingly diverse.” ★★★★

Hadreas is an acknowledged queer icon and has used his music to explore his sexuality. He was the only openly gay student at his high school and has acknowledged that he is essentially making music that he would have liked to have listened to as a teenager during those difficult years.

Ocean Vuong, author of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, had this to say about ‘Set My Heart On Fire Immediately’

That the songs are made resonant through the body’s triumph is a truth this album makes palpable. As a queer artist, this truth nourishes me, inspires me anew. This is music to both fight and make love to. To be shattered and whole with. If sound is, after all, a negotiation/disruption of time, then in the soft storm of Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, the future is here. Because it was always here. Welcome home.
