News: The Sea At Midnight Share New Single ‘Chopping Them Down’

Returning with their signature blend of post-punk melancholy and sharp social commentary, The Sea At Midnight unveil their latest single, ‘Chopping Them Down’. Driven by a foreboding melody and a steady, post-punk-tinged rhythm, the track unfolds like a cinematic warning — equal parts haunting and hypnotic.

Built around eerie synths, acoustic strums, and slicing electric guitar lines, ‘Chopping Them Down’ paints a vivid sonic landscape that mirrors the track’s urgent message. With a vocal delivery that leans toward the spoken-word style, Vince Grant’s voice becomes both a narrator and a messenger, channeling the fear and frustration surrounding the accelerating climate crisis and the devastating impact of deforestation.

Speaking on the track, songwriter Vince Grant explains: “The science behind climate change is straightforward… Deforestation eliminates a vital carbon sink and accelerates climate change by adding more carbon dioxide to the air. In a time when we are already witnessing devastating climate impacts, continuing to destroy forests and fuel this destructive cycle is nothing short of madness to me.”

Through his stark yet poetic lyricism, Grant makes ‘Chopping Them Down’ more than just a song — it’s a call to awareness. In a powerful gesture of solidarity, all Bandcamp proceeds from the single will be donated to victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires, grounding the track’s message in tangible action.

The Sea At Midnight — the solo project of Los Angeles-based artist Vince Grant — first emerged in 2020 with a self-titled debut that leaned into the introspective and sonically rich world of post-punk revival. Since then, Grant has honed a sound that bridges personal and planetary anxieties with cinematic depth. With a new EP slated for release in 2025, ‘Chopping Them Down’ offers a powerful glimpse into what’s to come from one of the genre’s most compelling modern voices.

Emotionally raw, atmospherically dense, and politically charged, ‘Chopping Them Down’ is The Sea At Midnight at their most vital.
