We are very pleased to premiere the new single from NSW South Coast band Club Camèl, ‘Keepin’ Me Up’. This is an aquatic effervescent slice of summer-soaked soul that has a touch of psychedelia in it with its airy, dreamy break and smooth saxophone highlights in its billowing hair.
There is something of a sparkling thrum in the funky guitar splashes and singer Julius Boess’s velvet-coated yearning vocals laced with delicious harmonies. This is a high-stepping pop of the highest order with an infectious and stirring vibe. Boess says of the song:
Keepin’ Me Up’ began its life deep in my loop pedal as I soloed in a single room granny flat during the first lockdown of 2020. With the opening lick and rhythm cemented in my ears, these components would become the basis of the track the band would work on for the following year. Lyrically inspired by 70s soul music by the likes of The Spinners and Marvin Gaye.
There’s a lovely dynamic ripple to the sound, a lounge-suited languid air enhanced by the saxophone which belonged to Boess’s late grandfather. He explains:
My grandfather (who I was named after) was the main reason I learned Saxophone. The tenor Saxophone was shipped over from the USA, and it’s the only thing I have of his, so it’s very special to me.
It certainly adds a golden burnish to the track:
