We are very honoured to bring you a premiere of the debut song ‘Strange Incantations’ from the new indie supergroup Fabulous Dreams, comprising of pillars of the indie scene in Australia, Lauren Crew (Imperial Broads), Nick Kennedy (The Electorate, Big Heavy Stuff Knievel and nearly every reputable indie band in Australia) and Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Lewis Goldmark). It is the perfect representation of the Marrickville Sound – members with a storied history in the industry from previous bands still creating remarkable music.

‘Strange Incantations’, unsurprisingly given its creators, is a louche, enigmatic track with a psychedelic hue – all velvet suits and arched eyebrows leaning nonchalantly against a door frame of a Chelsea mansion in front of an E-type Jaguar. Smoking of course.

Opening with a hypnotic crystalline guitar, reverbed and repetitive, the cool vocals enter with a late night smoky lounge room tenor. There is a swinging sixties vibe mixed in with an attitude redolent of Nick Cave or Rowland S. Howard doing a duet with Matt Monro backed up by Velvet Underground. In fact Judson says of the track:

One day I was listening to the album Street Hassle by Lou Reed on a beautiful country drive and was particularly struck by ‘Dirt’ – a song where Lou is absolutely tearing someone a new one. It was all so at odds with the pleasantness of the scenery. It made me think of a riff that I’d stowed away for a rainy day, and what direction I could take it as a song. A few people were grinding my gears at that time. I don’t go too hard, it’s really just a sigh.

The single was recorded live in the studio at The Sonic Funhouse in the Blue Mountains, with Judson behind the controls. Later, sessions moved to Lost Sound in Marrickville for final overdubs and mixing, which was done through the studio’s Trident console.

Absolutely fabulous. The band will be eschewing the normal streaming platforms, making it only available through their Bandcamp site above and YouTube.
