Naarm/Melbourne-based jazz/soul artist Allysha Joy has unveiled the third track, ‘David’, off her forthcoming album, ‘The Making of Silk’, and we’ve been given the pleasure of providing the first listen of it below.

‘David’ carries emotional depth and sonic craftsmanship as Allysha Joy’s husky, soulful voice strengthens the weight of the song’s themes, delivering each line with a poignant blend of vulnerability and strength. The prowess on the instrumentation adds rich, warm textures, creating an intimate atmosphere that envelops the listener. Captured live in the studio, the raw energy and spontaneous interaction between the musicians is both minimalistic and powerful, allowing each element to shine while contributing to the overall emotional impact.

Allysha shares a bit about the song:

“I think it would be painful for me at this point to not tell the truth — to say explicitly that this is a song about abuse, about multiple experiences of sexual assault. I want others to know that they shouldn’t stay quiet if they are in a situation where they don’t feel safe. I want to be open about these painful complex feelings of shame and confusion that I know other survivors will have experienced in feeling like they can’t speak up or even acknowledge what is happening, what happened. I won’t carry that shame anymore and I want others to know that they’re not alone.”

The artist has previously seen incredible support from the likes of Gilles Peterson & Jamz Supernova (BBC 6 Music), Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) and Laurent Garnier (PBB France), along with stations such as NTS, Jazz FM, Rinse FM, Lot Radio, KEXP & KCRW, and publications including OkayPlayer, Dazed, Clash and The Vinyl Factory.

The release is paired with an accompanying music video and is released digitally worldwide tomorrow, with the album ‘The Making of Silk’ landing on September 13th on vinyl & digital via First Word Recordings.
