Out tomorrow is “Girl you look amazing”, the first single taken from New Jersey singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins.’ new album Slow Phaser. She’s just finished a run of UK dates which featured Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Jim Sclavunos on drums, before heading home and supporting the same band on their North American Tour.
The idea for Girl you look amazing came to Nicole in a dream “It was being played in a big dance club and David Byrne was singing it. I woke up and recorded it into my phone. It took a while to figure out what “girl, you look amazing” could mean, as I’ve never been one to be that positive. So I wrote it about a girl who is the last one to shut the party down. Whose life is just an absolute mess. She might look amazing, but she misses all the real things that used to make her happy.”
The song itself dances around Atkins’ voice, part pop stomper, part indie chic. It has this sort of gorgeously stuttering feel about it, with the sort of chorus that would suit Tori Amos down to the ground, all melodic hooks and funky basslines. The accompanying video is fun an d cheeky and confounding and brilliant all at the same time.
