David Byrne has shared the second single from his forthcoming album Who Is the Sky?, due out 5 September via Matador Records. Titled “She Explains Things to Me”, the new track continues the record’s introspective themes, exploring the dynamics of communication, perception, and gender.
The song was partly inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, with Byrne using the narrator’s voice to reflect on moments when women are more attuned to emotional nuance and subtext than men. Rather than a critique of unsolicited commentary, the track presents a narrator who welcomes interpretation and insight from others—often women—when navigating ambiguity.
Who Is the Sky? is Byrne’s first album since 2018’s American Utopia, a record that was later adapted for Broadway and filmed by Spike Lee. The new album sees Byrne working with producer Kid Harpoon (known for his work with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus) and the New York-based Ghost Train Orchestra, who arranged the album’s 12 tracks. Guests include Hayley Williams of Paramore, St. Vincent, and The Smile drummer Tom Skinner.
The album’s first single, “Everybody Laughs”, introduced the tone of the project with themes of collective resilience and emotional vulnerability. Its accompanying video, directed by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo, adds a visual layer to the track’s reflections on human connection in uncertain times.
In support of Who Is the Sky?, Byrne will embark on a world tour through 2025 and 2026, with UK dates scheduled for March 2026. Additional North American shows have recently been added and Byrne will visit Australia and NZ in January 2026.
