Track: Fabulous Dreams follow up their debut single with ‘Measured By Mess’ – a glorious hip swinging dreamy pop delight.

New indie supergroup Fabulous Dreams follow up last month’s delicious debut single ‘Strange Incantations’ (see my review here) with new track ‘Measured By Mess’, and things are just getting better.

‘Measure By Mess’ kicks off with a swagger, high strutting and proud before the soft gliding velvet female vocals of Lauren Crew layers sweet honey over the ambulant motorik sound. The track builds up with an euphoric melodic blast: a wall of warm fuzzy cotton wool sound. A guitar solo cuts through like an ice breaker through ice and then disappears into the fugue. The sonic onslaught certainly recalls elements of Curve, Slowdive and other shoegaze luminaries but there is something sixties-infused, like a soundtrack to Antonioni’s Blow-Up: all swinging hips, flared trousers and beehives blaring out the open windows of a Union Jack-painted Mini Cooper.

Crew says:

I haven’t written many love songs, and I didn’t actually realise ‘Measured By Mess’ was one until we started working on arrangements. I was trying to communicate the mood I wanted to capture and it occurred to me that, although it expresses a darker aspect of the feeling, it is in essence a love song.

Indeed, the lyrics are infused with a bright eyed romantic fatalism:

In the face of the worst,
A hug’s like Heaven,
An island immersed.
Drifting on hurt,
Watching the stars,
The lightest kiss can find the deepest scars.

This is a stunning and very exciting release, and I can’t wait to see what’s next:

‘Measure By Mess’ is out now and available to stream and download via all the usual sites and through the link above.

Fabulous Dreams comprises of members of the cream of the indie scene in Australia, Lauren Crew (Imperial Broads), Nick Kennedy (The Electorate, Big Heavy Stuff Knievel and nearly every reputable indie band in Australia) and Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Lewis Goldmark). It is the perfect representation of the Marrickville Sound – members with a storied history in the industry from previous bands still creating remarkable music.
