Chanteuse from the acclaimed The Jezabels, Hayley Mary, has just announced her sophomore EP ‘The Drip’ for release on 18 June 2021 and added some icing to the cake with the release of a new track off the EP, ‘Young And Stupid’.

As with many releases this year, the haunting presence of COVID continues to float in the air, and ‘Young And Stupid’ acknowledges the strange phenomena of a ringing landline as an inspiration to transience and the temporality of life during a visit to her partner’s family home:

I hadn’t realised they even had a landline. It was like a ghost calling through the hallway with that old school ring. ‘Who the hell even calls you on that?’ I asked. ‘Only Nana,’ my partner replied. As it was in the middle of the worst part of covid, there was a certain vibe around; of everything that had been taken for granted; of the preciousness of life and the fragility of the old, mixed with a pronounced concern with where technology was going to take us. We reflected on the probability that when the last landlines in the world stopped ringing it would only be because a certain generation was gone.

The result is an imperious and moving ballad filled with melody and melancholy, carried on Mary’s glorious vocals. The video, directed by Michael Ridley, is a beautifully shot performance piece:
